I grew up in a family of smokers, and I personally feel that this ban would be an amazing benefit to campus.

Smokers can bitch all they want to about how it's not fair to ban it, but lets face it, smokers don't give a damn about the people around them to begin with.

I've met a few smokers in my life, and we're talking single digits here, that ask before they light. On campus there's groups of people huddled around the door ways of buildings (Cheek and any residence hall especially) that are smoking. (Isn't smoking withing X feet of a state building illegal? Aren't we supported by the state?) To get to class/my dorm I have to walk through a fog of smoke that literally gags me every time.

Walking around campus is lovely too. You're surrounded by other students and have to walk at the rate of the slowest person in front of you, It's awesome when its a smoker. They're moving slow and puffing along, with no consideration to the people around them. Giving a nice dose of their "fresh air" to everyone around them.

To marbee - If you think for even a second that what smokers exhale is "fresh" you need to walk outside of your fog every once in a while. It's an absolutely disgusting, noxious mixture. Your stated source was 1989. If you recall smoking was all the rage in the 80-90s (when you probably started). Smoking in public institutions was fine as well, including hospitals. You don't see that anymore - BECAUSE IT'S NOT HEALTHY. On the back of every pack of cigarettes you buy, there's a little warning informing you that IT'S NOT HEALTHY to smoke. Especially for pregnant women. The affects of smoking while pregnant is no secret, and even the Nazis knew it was bad. http://www.marchofdimes.com/professionals/14332_1171.asp

I don't care if people smoke, that's their business, but whenever their "freedom" intrudes on everyone else around them, then that's where it should end. My high school democracy teacher said it best - "Your freedoms end where another person's begin".

People are free to be naked in their own homes, but they certainly aren't allowed to do it on the streets. Why? It's inconsiderate, rude, and doesn't benefit society in any way. Similar to smoking, I think.

If you feel you need a nanny state to protect you, you should have never left home. Freedom lovers everywhere would feel better about it! People like you have taken away private property rights! Perhaps you need a bit more schooling in the U.S. Constitution. If our country was a democracy, 51% of the people could decide they want to kill the other 49%. That is why our nation is a Constitutional Republic, to protect the minority, in this case, smokers! These days laws are enacted by polls. We need to get rid of these lawmakers who keep giving voters anything they want and elect those that abide by the U.S. Constitution. I think all bar owners should file a class action lawsuit against the state for trampling their private property rights! These are thugs enacting these laws in the first place!

Close to 90% of the weight of tobacco smoke is composed of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and plain water (1989 Report of the Surgeon General p. 80). This mix is usually called “fresh air.” For this we take away property rights? So that someone’s smoke-free preference can trump an owners rights? More and more people are discovering the truth behind this social engineering that "denormalize" behavior. Al Capone had nothing on the extremely well-funded prohibitionists of today, like big pharma who finance these bans in the first place and then pass the costs on to the local govt and business owners. It's time to tell big pharma to get back to finding cures with the hundreds of millions of donated dollars instead of spending it squashing the freedom of the very people donating. It was never about health, just money, as witnessed in NYC.
The truth about second-hand smoke is finally out.

This is a very dangerous road the public is taking in regard to enacting smoking bans with false science as the basis! Tobacco Control organizations like the American Cancer Society, ASH, Tobacco Free Kids, etc., have become nothing but Perception Management firms. They are paid to CREATE "truth". Created truth is controllable. PM uses select information involving falsehood and deception. Really smoke and mirrors to get people to believe what they want the "truth" to be. Perception Management as a rule uses deception to influence emotions to an end. The difference between real and perception is like a stick of dynamite and the A-bomb. Wars can be created using Perception Management! Everyone, really, has seen PM in practice, and small business owners are experiencing this with legislation against their Constitutional rights. It requires absolutely no courage to support a popular position, even if completely wrong or illegal.

Your paranoia can be helped, and you should seek it! To think you are harmed by a little smoke! Airplanes put out more in one day than you will EVER be exposed to by a lifetime of smokers.
Cigarette 3 mg of nitrogen oxide (NO) and 40 mg of carbon monoxide (CO)
One single 747 takeoff/landing 115 pounds of NO and 32 pounds of CO
(That’s 52 million mg of NO and 14 million mg of CO)

Smoke is lighter than air.

It does not 'drift' around

No one on this planet ever got cancer solely from second-hand smoke
