Smokers can bitch all they want to about how it's not fair to ban it, but lets face it, smokers don't give a damn about the people around them to begin with. I've met a few smokers in my life, and we're talking single digits here, that ask before they light. On campus there's groups of people huddled around the door ways of buildings (Cheek and any residence hall especially) that are smoking. (Isn't smoking withing X feet of a state building illegal? Aren't we supported by the state?) To get to class/my dorm I have to walk through a fog of smoke that literally gags me every time. Walking around campus is lovely too. You're surrounded by other students and have to walk at the rate of the slowest person in front of you, It's awesome when its a smoker. They're moving slow and puffing along, with no consideration to the people around them. Giving a nice dose of their "fresh air" to everyone around them. To marbee - If you think for even a second that what smokers exhale is "fresh" you need to walk outside of your fog every once in a while. It's an absolutely disgusting, noxious mixture. Your stated source was 1989. If you recall smoking was all the rage in the 80-90s (when you probably started). Smoking in public institutions was fine as well, including hospitals. You don't see that anymore - BECAUSE IT'S NOT HEALTHY. On the back of every pack of cigarettes you buy, there's a little warning informing you that IT'S NOT HEALTHY to smoke. Especially for pregnant women.
